Top Ten Tuesday (35) - Books Set in the Western & Southern US

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week's topic was about the top ten books set in a specific time or place.  As I was looking through my books, I realized that I read A LOT of fantasy, especially epic fantasy set in other worlds.  But I didn't want to have to pick ten from that list, so I looked for books with settings that I don't tend to read as much, and I found ten books set in the western and southern U.S.A. (four in the West and six in the South).

  1. I love books set in Savannah. And pretty much anywhere in Georgia. I just recently finished Still Life in Brunswick Stew by Larissa Reinhart.

    I enjoyed reading your list.

    1. Thanks!

I never really thought about it until today, but I don't have a lot of books that take place in the South. Which is sad because I love it down there. I've visited Georgia, South Carolina, Florida (Disney really, but it's still Florida), North Carolina, Virginia, and Mississippi, and loved the people and the laid-back atmosphere. I think I'll have to check out some more books set in the South.

  2. Really interesting take on the topic. I own The Help and have been meaning to read it for a while, and I have The Raven Boys on my to-read list.

    1. Even though I didn't love The Raven Boys, I still think it was really good, and I loved the Virginia setting. The Help, however, is amazing. I hope you love it.

  4. The girls and I loved Amber House. I enjoy Southern fiction anyway, but this one blended past and present so well.

    1. Agreed. I loved how the book gave such amazing insight into what the South is like now compared to how it was in the past. Plus, it had the perfect amount of suspense.

  5. I loved The Help. Southern fiction is a genre I enjoy but don't read nearly enough of.

    1. Same here. I was actually amazed that I found as many as I did, since I tend to read LOTS of epic fantasy.

  6. This is a fun list! THe Help is a great book. I also love Stargirl and The Raven Boys. I devoured the Love Comes Softly series by Janette Oke when I was younger. I haven't read any other books by her so I will add this one to my list.

    1. The Love Comes Softly series is actually one of the series I haven't read yet, but I mean to. My favorite Oke books, besides A Gown of Spanish Lace, are A Bride for Donnigan and They Called Her Mrs. Doc.

  7. Hi! Love your list! I've read a few books set in the South that I really enjoyed. "The Secret Life of Bees" comes to mind. Also those written by Michael Lee West, who if you haven't heard of her.....yes, she's a she!.. And a couple of books by Rebecca Wells...Those are the first ones that popped into my head! This is my first time to participate in TTT and it's great fun.

    1. I'm so glad you decided to participate! TTT is one of my favorite memes; I look forward to it every week.

I can't believe I forgot about Rebecca Wells and the Ya YA Sisterhood books. And I haven't read Michael Lee West yet, but I have always wanted to check out Mermaids in the Basement.
